Accessibility for people with disabilities

at West Point Inn

Driving Directions:

Persons with disabilities who are unable to walk/hike to the Inn are allowed to drive/be driven to the Inn using approximately one mile of the extremely rough, narrow Old Railroad Grade fire road.  High clearance vehicles are recommended.  Low clearance vehicles can “hang-up” on the uneven road surface.

At Old Railroad Grade Fire Road’s junction with East Ridgecrest Boulevard (almost to the parking lot located at the top of Mt. Tamalpais near the Peak), there is a locked electric-powered gate with a number pad to operate the gate that is reachable from the driver’s side window.  Because cell phones often do not work on Mt. Tamalpais, to open the gate, it is necessary to have the gate operating code which must be obtained from the Innkeeper in advance by telephoning 415-388-9955 during the Inn’s daytime business hours, which are 11 am to 5 pm, Tuesday through Sunday.

Hearing or SpeechDisabilities:

For persons with hearing or speech disabilities, please call the California Telecommunications Relay Service at 711.  The Telecommunications Relay Service uses operators, called communications assistants (CAs), to facilitate telephone calls between people with hearing and speech disabilities and other individuals.

ID Required:

If you drive/are driven to the Inn, you will be required to have a California disability parking placard (with required DMV identification form or a disability parking placard and ID from any state) or disability license plates on the vehicle.

Parking and Accessibility within the Inn:

At the West Point Inn, there is one van accessible parking space, an accessible wheelchair ramp from the parking space into the Inn’s accessible Member’s Lounge with a wheelchair accessible path-of-travel throughout the main floor of the Inn, including through the Inn’s community kitchen.  The main deck is available from the interior of the Inn through the front door which is located in the accessible Visitor’s Lounge.

Accessible Restrooms:

On the Inn’s accessible “L” shaped deck, there are two public restrooms, with one being fully accessible.  The sink in the accessible public bathroom has hot water and an almost code-compliant accessible shower.

Reservations for Overnight Stays:

If you are interested in staying overnight at the Inn, you will need to make reservations in advance, on-line at the West Point Inn’s reservation system.

One Accessible Cabin:

The West Point Inn has one wheelchair accessible cabin, the Toby Cabin #8, which is reachable by an accessible wheelchair ramp connected to the Inn’s main deck.  Individuals (1 person) with a disability who stay overnight by themselves (or with an attendant) will not be charged the minimum two-person rate for the use of the accessible Toby cabin (cabin #8).

The Toby Cabin has the following amenities:

* Private toilet.  It also has an accessible sink (with no hot water).

* One queen-sized bed that allows for the use of a Hoyer lift (If needed, a portable lift must be supplied by the overnight guest).  In the future, when we build the new, fully accessible cabin at the Inn, besides the one accessible queen-sized bed for disabled guests available in that cabin, there will be a separate cot available for an attendant.  We also hope to have a Hoyer lift available on site.

* Other:  All visitors, including those with disabilities, must bring their own pillow cases, sheets (or sleeping bags) and towels.

* Electricity: If you will need to charge or operate medical equipment during your stay at the Inn, please provide that information while making your reservation.  Additionally, upon arriving at the Inn, please inform the Innkeeper of your medical equipment power needs. The Innkeeper will be able to provide you with the necessary electrical power connection.

Note:

It can get very cold at the Inn, especially at night.  It is recommended that all visitors bring warm clothing.  None of the rooms or cabins (including the accessible Toby Cabin) have electricity or heat.  In an emergency, the Innkeeper can provide you with the necessary power connection and small room heater.

Please call the West Point Inn’s Innkeeper prior to arriving at the Inn if you have questions regarding the available accessibility for persons with disabilities at the Inn: 415-388-9955
